ABOUT

“Resonant, mellifluous and deft with dramatic nuance”(Millbrook independent), tenor Eric Carey is a versatile performer possessing a “hypnotic voice” and a repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the present day. This summer, Mr. Carey will be a Young Artist at the Britten Pears Young-Artist Programme in Aldeburgh, UK before returning to the Tanglewood Music Center where he can be seen in the American Premiere of Richard Ayres’ The Cricket Recovers led by Thomas Adès. Other performances at Tanglewood this season include Cantatas 42, 127, and 161 led by John Harbison and various performances of art song and chamber music as well as masterclasses with Dawn Upshaw and Randall Scarlata. This fall he will be the Tenor Soloist in Bach’s B Minor Mass  led by Ryan Turner with Emmanuel Music, joining their roster of artists for the year.

This past fall, Mr. Carey began his tenure as a Resident Artist of the Opera Institute at Boston University. His appearances with the Institute thus far have included School Master in Janáček’s Cunning Little Vixen in a co-production with the Glimmerglass Festival directed by E. Loren Meeker, Detective Thibodeau in Picker’s Dolores Claiborne in co-production with New York City Opera, and Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata conducted by William Lumpkin as a part of their Fringe Festival. In addition to his role in the Opera Institute, he is an applied voice instructor at Boston University and maintains a private studio in the Boston metro area.

Recent appearances have included Tenor Soloist in Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer with Music For Food; scenes as Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia directed by David Kneuss; Tenor Soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with Sinfonia Concertante; and Tenor Soloist Britten’s Les Illuminations with The Orchestra Now conducted by James Bagwell in New York City’s Symphony Space.

Concert repertoire highlights include Bach’s Mass in B Minor,  Cantatas 42, 127, 161, 159, 109, and his Magnificat; Handel’s Messiah; Britten’s Les Illuminations de Rimbaud; as well as Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Die Jahreszeiten. He has appeared with organizations such as Emmanuel Music, Tanglewood Music Center, Albany Symphony, Bach in Baltimore, Classics on Hudson, and more.

As a fierce advocate for art song, Mr. Carey recently joined the Artist Roster of Boston Art Song Society (BASS). Ever after his love for art song, he has held two prestigious fellowships at the Tanglewood Music Center, and the Britten Pears Young Artists Program. He received the 2018 Gerda Lissner Lieder Competition Encouragement Award, and reached the finals of the 2019 International Joy in Singing Art Song Competition. He will present two recitals with renowned pianist Javier Arrebola, and he partners regularly with Boston-based pianist Bethany Pietroniro.

Being just as passionate about new music as he is of standard repertoire, Mr. Carey sang the premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams’ piece Little Cosmic Dust Poem at the Morgan Library (2017). He took first prize in the Sparks and Wiry Cries Song Slam Competition hosted by Tom Cipullo, performing In New York, a piece that was written for him by composer Whitney E. George.

Mr. Carey recently made his fourth appearance with the Grammy award-winning Albany Symphony in the spring of 2018 as part of the American Music Festival led by Maestro David Alan Miller. In the summer of 2018, he was a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center where he was featured in concert singing cantatas by J.S. Bach under the baton of John Harbison, the role of the Funeral Director in Bernstein’s A Quiet Place, and singing Britten’s Canticle V, The Death of Saint Narcissus. He spent the Summer of 2017 in Suzhou, China singing the role of Gherardo in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and performing traditional Chinese song with the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra.

He graduated in May 2018 from Dawn Upshaw’s Vocal Arts Program at Bard College where he appeared as the Queen’s Attendant in Harbison’s Full Moon in March, Tenor in Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, and as the title role in Candide. While at Bard, he sang in masterclasses for Peter Sellars, John Harbison, Margo Garrett, and Pierre Vallet.

Alongside his studies at Bard, he also co-created and produced concerts in the Hudson Valley. With a passion for curating and creating thought-provoking and immersive programs, he produced concerts at unique venues, engaging local audiences and small businesses with eclectic vocal and instrumental programming from Joni Mitchell to Monteverdi.

Mr. Carey holds a Master of Music degree in Vocal Arts from Bard College (2018) and a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and Music Business from The Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University (2015).
